Here in Williamsburg, we’re blessed with a rich history, but our community’s true strength lies in the people and organizations working tirelessly to make it a more compassionate, educated, and vibrant place for everyone. I’ve found that the quickest way to feel like you truly belong here is to get involved.
Today, I want to introduce you to four local nonprofits where you can roll up your sleeves and make a real difference. This isn’t just a list—it’s your invitation to become part of the fabric of Williamsburg.
1. For the Animal Lovers: Heritage Humane Society
If your idea of a perfect afternoon involves a wagging tail or a contented purr, the Heritage Humane Society is your place. As our local open-admission shelter, they are the heroes for homeless animals, but they’re also a hub for human compassion.
- What They Do: Provide shelter, medical care, and love to thousands of animals each year while running community programs like pet food pantries.
- Your Invitation to Help: You don’t have to adopt to make an impact. Become a volunteer dog walker or cat socializer, or provide a crucial temporary home by becoming a foster.
- Join the Fun: Support their mission at events like their annual Holiday Bazaar

2. For the Family Advocates: Child Development Resources (CDR)
The simplest moments—like a child taking their first step or saying their first word—are monumental. Established in 1965, Child Development Resources (CDR) has been ensuring that every child in our community, including those with disabilities or delays, has the support they need to hit those milestones.
- What They Do: Offer life-changing early intervention services, inclusive preschool, and vital support for parents and families.
- Your Invitation to Help: Volunteer to read in a classroom or help at a fundraiser. Your professional skills can also be a huge asset.
- Join the Fun: See you in the next Trike Trek or Oyster Roast!

3. For the Empowerers: Literacy for Life
Imagine the doors that open when someone can read a job application, a medicine label, or help their child with homework. Literacy for Life provides free, personalized tutoring to adults, empowering them to achieve their personal, workplace, and educational goals.
- What They Do: They provide reading, writing, math, and English language support. This help enables adults to achieve goals ranging from getting a driver’s license or a workforce certification to completing a GED, becoming a U.S. citizen, or starting classes at a community college.
- Your Invitation to Help: You don’t need to be a teacher! Become a tutor—they provide all the training. Tutors give just 90 minutes per week, making it a direct and manageable way to change a life.
- Join the Fun: Giving Tuesday has become one of the world’s most important philanthropic days of the entire year.

4. For the Culture Creators: Culture Fix
Williamsburg’s history is world-famous, but its modern, beating heart is powered by arts and culture. Culture Fix is the nonprofit ensuring our community remains creative and connected by making the arts accessible to all.
- What They Do: Fuel our local arts scene by producing First Fridays, live music series, and supporting artists with grants and opportunities.
- Your Invitation to Help: Volunteer in any community event or become a “Culture Sustainer” with a monthly donation. The simplest way to help? Just show up and be part of the audience!
